Prominent Vegas oddsmaker dies
August 19
Well-known and longtime Las Vegas oddsmaker known as Jackie Dell,
died Tuesday night August 16th at St. Elizabeth's Hospital in
his home-town Youngstown, Ohio. Mr. Dell was 76 years young.
Dell, whose given name at birth was Jack Delfry, reportedly died from
complications stemming from a heart attack he had in the beginning of
August. A nursing supervisor from St. Elizabeth's confirmed his passing
on Wednesday.
At this time, service details are still being planned.
One of Dell's more gregarious odds-making moves was when he gave Bill
Clinton 1 to 3 odds of becoming President of The United States back in
1992. A time when many wagering analysts were calling the race too close
to provide odds.
Dell, an oddsmaker for 46 years, got his first Las Vegas column in
1979, when he was hired by the old North Las Vegas Valley Times to offer
his college and pro football offerings and college basketball odds three
times weekly.
Later in his career, his oddsmaking column appeared in the Las Vegas
Sun and a handful of other weekly periodicals.
Many Vegas papers recall him as a colorful character who gained much
oddsmaking respect in his lengthy odds offerings.
Surviving family members are not known.
